Between 2019 and 2022 CoPTIC America was the premier advocacy voice for translators and interpreters everywhere.

CoPTIC America Advocacy in Action

All good things must come to an end! After almost 3 years, the Coalition of Practicing Interpreters and Translators is saying farewell. While advocacy efforts to improve the conditions of interpreters and translators will always be needed, our 2 primary purposes for existing as a Coalition have been accomplished.

CoPTIC was here for you in 2019 and 2020 during the effort to earn an exemption from AB 5. We answered your questions and advocated for YOU.

Months of effort bore fruit in significant exemption for translators and interpreters in California law.

AB 2257, shaped by the sustained advocacy of practicing linguists in every professional sector and part of the state, established an exemption for translators under Professional Services and interpreters under Referral Agency Relationship, protecting our livelihoods.

In 2019, our community saw the threat that AB 5 posed to the livelihoods of translators and interpreters everywhere and came together to form a powerful Coalition made up of YOUR voices. Together, guided by the winning strategy of our savvy and well-connected advocate, we spoke truth to power and were heard: translators and interpreters in 2020 earned exemptions from application of AB 5, the gig-economy law that had turned freelancers into employees overnight and upended our profession and diverse clientele.

Then in 2021, as CoPTIC America, we brought awareness to the dangers of the ProAct’s current ABC section, sufficient to safely say it is on our collective radar should it become a problem down the road.

We thank each and every one of you, in California and nationwide, for your active participation, generous financial support, and more importantly your faith in that together, under our leadership, we would be successful at reaching our objectives.

I speak for CoPTIC’s founding and current Steering Committee members and for our spectacular advocate, Hans Johnson, when I say that we will be there for you when a new challenge crops up. Our website will remain online thanks to our supporters’ donations, but the email will no longer be active. You can find me or any one of us on LinkedIn or Facebook, so please stay in touch.

For now, we each will be able to dedicate much needed time and energy to our families, friends and businesses while continuing to support our beloved professions on an as-needed basis.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you.
